Between ZEPA and Cepa, birds and wines

La Mancha

We propose a unique experience that combines nature and bird watching in one of the Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA) of La Mancha, with a visit to the old caves - Tomelloso winery and an exquisite gastronomic tasting of typical products accompanied by the best wines of our land. A unique experience in nature to enjoy this pairing of birds and wine.

We will begin the experience by discovering one of the many lagoons with a Special Bird Protection Area (ZEPA) belonging to the La Mancha Wetlands, where we will enjoy nature, fauna and the landscape.

Located between the provinces of Toledo, Cuenca and Ciudad - Real, the La Mancha Wetlands are home to the largest and most important complex of saline lagoons on the Iberian Peninsula, with lagoons such as Manjavacas in Mota del Cuervo, La Veguilla and Camino de Villafranca in Alcázar de San Juan, Salicor in Campo de Criptana, Laguna Grande de Quero, Peñahueca in Villacañas, Laguna Chica and Laguna de la Sal in Villafranca de los Caballeros or those of la Vega and Retamar in Pedro Muñoz. Some of them are ideal for walking along its banks, getting to know its more than interesting interpretation centers and even for taking a bath and cooling off in summer.

The main attraction of these lagoons is the presence of waterfowl and steppe among meadows of albardín, a plant with saline soils similar to esparto, thus we find species of summer birds such as the black-necked grebe, white-headed malvasia, stilt, avocet, basket, plover. , piconera swamp, plover plover and purple swamphen, and wintering birds such as jars, black-tailed marlin, common archbebe, curlew and great walleye, among the most peculiar.

In addition, we can enjoy the spectacle of the flamingos that usually move from one lagoon to another at certain times of the year. Then, once the nature activity is finished, we will go to Tomelloso to discover the origin of La Mancha wines. If we could see the Tomelloso subsoil in a global way, we would see it completely bored.

The ancient cave - cellars of the city keep all the essence of the wine culture and truly form a unique underground world to discover. We will make a route visiting some of the 2,200 existing caves - cellars, excavated in the past in the rock to make and store wine in clay jars. An impressive wine heritage and we will end the day enjoying an exquisite gastronomic tasting of typical products accompanied by the best wines of our land.
